![]() CYO Sports Program Handbook
1. To foster and develop a Catholic identity in all that we do. 2. To provide an opportunity for each child to experience a meaningful contribution to a team, and learn to understand commitment and personal responsibility. 3. To provide the child a means to learn fundamentals of the sport, develop their skills, and learn what it means to give their best efforts at all times. 4. To provide a safe and caring environment, along with appropriate expectations, discipline and challenges, so as to nurture intellectual, physical, emotional and spiritual growth. PLAYING TIME It is the firm belief of the Our Lady of Sorrows Athletics that the goals cited above can best be accomplished through participation in practices and, to a varying degree in games, of all students in the various programs. The purpose of the 5th and 6th grade teams, as well as the 7th and 8th gold and white teams, is to be developmental in nature – preparing all for the chance to participate in the 7th and 8th grade blue competitive arena. The 7th and 8th grade blue level is intended to be a highly competitive level of play, and game playing time is not guaranteed.
Attendance at practices and maintaining a commitment to coaches, teammates and the parish is critical. It should be noted that absences from practices, or discipline problems on the part of the child, might result in reduced playing time in games. If this occurs, both the child and his/her parents will have the situation explained to them in advance of the affected game.
PROGRAM PRACTICES All program practice sessions are open for parental viewing (discretion however is asked in considering the appropriateness of the presence of younger siblings and of sideline comments).
CATHOLIC RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM PARTICIPATION To maintain program participation eligibility, all non-OLS students must attend a Catholic Religious Education Program. Attendance will be verified weekly by the Athletic Director. Anyone found in violation of not attending will be suspended from all team involvement until attendance has improved.
ATHLETIC PARTICIPATION PHYSICAL FORM In order for your child to participate in an OLS program, a current physical form must be completed/signed by yourself as well as a physician. This form must be turned in before your child will be allowed to try-out for a team.
PROGRAM PARTICIPATION, FEES, AND UNIFORM POLICY In order for your child to participate in an OLS program parents must sign and submit the CYO Participation Form acknowledging assumption of risk/injury and pay sport fee prior to receiving a team uniform. (For uniform policy please see the “Uniform Distribution, Care and Return Policy form.)
COMPLIANCE WITH CYO RULES Our Lady of Sorrows' parish sports programs are played under the administration of the Catholic Youth Organization. All coaches, parents and children must abide by the CYO rules. They can be found at www.cyodetroit.org.
QUESTIONS/CONCERNS – THE LINE OF AUTHORITY All parties involved in CYO sports are expected to act civilly, courteously and respectfully toward each other. Toward this end, it is strongly urged that any concern be dwelled upon at least overnight before being discussed with anyone (coach, Athletic Director ar another parent). Any matter related to team participation should be addressed initially with the coach. If needed, a conversation with the Athletic Director is always recommended.
