CHILDREN'S LITURGY OF THE WORD

Children's Liturgy of the Word

An Invitation to Catechists

Every Sunday the parish gathers to share a Eucharistic Meal and to hear the stories of our faith.  These are the readings from the Hebrew Scriptures that tell the stories of our ancient roots in the chosen people of God and the New Testament stories about the early church.  Some of these readings are difficult to understand and a liturgical setting doesn't allow us to raise our hands to ask a question.  For adults, the homilist provides the fullness of the scripture readings, however, children gain more from the readings when they hear them in language suited to their age in the company of other children.  And so, the children ages four through grade three are dismissed from the assembly and process downstairs into a relaxed environment.  The catechist proclaims the Word of God from the children's lectionary and engages the children in conversation about the gospel and readings.

Catechists for this ministry are given excellent materials to help them prepare for the 15-20 minute session and are given the opportunity to schedule themselves.  They gather once a year for a brief meeting to discuss this very important ministry and set the calendar for the coming months.
